Google’s AdSense and PayPal cease operations in Crimea – RBTH
On Friday Google blocked the accounts of Crimean residents using its contextual advertising service AdSense, customers of the service told Interfax on Friday.
The message from the service said: “Your Google AdSense account is located in Crimea. The publishers from this region can no longer cooperate with AdSense in connection with the sanctions that have recently come into force. For this reason, your account will be closed.” This notice was given to Interfax by a resident of the Crimean city of Simferopol on condition of anonymity.
Additionally, international electronic payment system PayPal has stopped servicing its clients in Crimea, an Interfax correspondent reported, citing a letter from the company, which PayPal sent to its Crimean clients on Jan. 22. The letter says: “This was a very difficult decision for us, but we are unfortunately unable to provide services to our clients in Crimea at this time.”
PayPal is a subsidiary of American e-commerce company eBay. According to PayPal’s website, its services are used by around 100 million people in 190 countries. In addition, PayPal works with 25 different currencies.
These are not the first international companies to cease operations in Crimea. International payment systems Visa and MasterCard, as well as the AppStore have suspended activities in recent months.
